How to get more out of Picto our AI based image generator

A series of experiments with text prompts to generate “exactly” what you can imagine with words.

The algorithms underlying Picto offer such broad capabilities that it requires several sessions of use to fully grasp how you could use it. The purpose of this post is to fast track the journey. Picto is based on Stable Diffusion AI. There is now a lot of internet literature on the idiosyncrasies of the three major such systems (Dall-E and Midjourney are the other two). The examples below are based on our system, however the ideas should apply more broadly to all.

I chose as the subject of this post a blue rose because in the natural world they are extremely rare (scientist used in-lab genetic engineering to coax the color blue in roses). This choice is to underline the ability of the AI to be useful both as as a creative substitute for stock images and in helping writers visualize entirely imaginary worlds.

The prompts below are the exact words I used to generate the image in Picto. None of the predefined filters were applied. The first part of the experiment is a set of  prompts to generate relatively easy images - similar to what you might find in a google image search. The advantage of AI is that the results are unique, yours and free to use

  1. Field of blue rose, epic shot, wide lens, dramatic lighting

The next set of prompt descriptions are more demanding. They are also almost impossible to get without commissioning your own custom art work. Unlike the first task this takes some back and forth. It took me 4-5 iterations to get the results I wanted.

The next test is to create a blue rose in a specific setting - as you might describe a scene in a novel or a movie. This is hard with current AI but possible with some trial and error. The key thing to know is that the current AI is able to paint/draw/render far better than it can truly understand language. So what seems like a simple task of creating objects relative to other objects - instructions like “on top of” are really tricky. They require more experiments with alternative prompts. The following took 8-10 and with some breaks in between to rethink how to get the right results.

  1. Beautiful blue rose on the roof of a Parisian apartment, dusk, cinematic light

  1. Photo of a blue rose with the Brooklyn bridge in the background, wide lens, natural light

The last scenario - a real strength of the AI is - to describe a world that is entirely fictional.

  1. Beautiful blue rose suspended inside a giant ice sphere, dramatic lighting
